Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are substances injected beneath the skin to add volume, fill in wrinkles, and create a smoother appearance. They are commonly used in cosmetic procedures to address signs of aging and enhance facial features. Dermal fillers can be made from various materials, and the choice of filler depends on the specific treatment goals and individual preferences.

Common types of dermal fillers include:

1. **Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (HA):** These fillers are made from a substance that naturally occurs in the body. Hyaluronic acid helps to retain water and add volume to the skin. Popular brand names include Juvederm and Restylane.

2. **Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA):** This filler is composed of calcium particles in a gel, and it stimulates collagen production. Radiesse is a common brand of CaHA filler.

3. **Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA):** This biodegradable synthetic substance helps stimulate collagen production over time. Sculptra is an example of a PLLA filler.

4. **Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA):** PMMA fillers contain tiny, non-absorbable particles that remain under the skin for a longer duration. Bellafill is a brand of PMMA filler.

Dermal fillers are used to address various concerns, including smoothing wrinkles and fine lines, restoring volume to areas that have lost fullness, and enhancing features like lips and cheeks. The effects of dermal fillers are usually temporary, and repeat treatments are often required to maintain the desired results.

Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins, like brand name Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport, are botulinum toxin injections that are widely used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines, providing a smoother and more youthful appearance. The treatment involves the temporary paralysis of specific facial muscles, which prevents them from contracting and causing wrinkles.

Here are key aspects of neurotoxins:

  1. Target Areas: These neurotoxins are is commonly used to address wrinkles and lines in specific facial areas, including:

    • Forehead Lines: Horizontal lines that appear on the forehead.

    • Glabellar Lines: Vertical lines between the eyebrows, often referred to as "frown lines."

    • Crow's Feet: Lines that radiate from the corners of the eyes.

    • Medical: TMJ, bruxism, severe headaches and migraines.

  2. Mechanism of Action: Botox works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. This inhibits muscle contractions and reduces the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repetitive facial movements.

  3. Procedure: Administered in a healthcare professional's office. The procedure is relatively quick, with minimal discomfort. A fine needle is used to inject small amounts of the medication into targeted muscles.

  4. Results: The effects usually become noticeable within a few days to a week after the treatment, depending on specific medication used. The results are temporary, lasting for several months. Repeat treatments are often necessary to maintain the desired aesthetic improvements.

  5. Safety: When administered by qualified and experienced healthcare professionals, these injections are generally considered safe. However, like any medical procedure, it carries some risks and potential side effects. Common side effects include temporary bruising, redness, or muscle weakness in the treated areas.

  6. Consultation: Before undergoing treatment, you will come into the office for a consultation. We will assess your facial anatomy, discuss expectations, review your medical history, prior procedures and come up with a comprehensive and safe plan to move forward.
